Improvement of thermal plasma sprayed coating adhesion strength by laser microtexturing of aluminum

Grit blasting and laser processing are two common methods used for surface microtexturing to enhance coating adhesion strength. This paper reports a thermomechanical method of Al 7075 alloy using nanosecond pulsed generate large increase in area. The entire area the substrate was microtextured melting, ablation, resolidification. morphology consisted tightly packed pillar-like features. microtexture varied by controlling parameters. coated with metallic particles thermal spray process. tensile adhesive strength thermally sprayed higher over 17% 5-μm deep microtexture, compared that grit-blasted samples. Also, this is highest reported laser-based bond coatings.
